High Country Trekking and Expedition is an independent company founded by adventurer and mountaineer Sumba Rinji Sherpa and Ang Rita Sherpa in January of 1999 with emphasis on responsible travel and client-oriented customized-able trips.
Our story began when a 16-year-old Mr. Sumba started the adventure as a porter. With a humble beginning as a porter for two years, he became a kitchen boy for carrying kitchen camping equipment for many mountaineering groups. Later on, he got promoted to Sherpa (guide) and finally became a Licensed Trekking Guide in 1989.
The same year Mr. Sumba led an expedition in the passes of different mountains with a purpose to find new exploration routes. Eventually, the trek route in Lower Dolpo region was discovered by the group. The Lower Dolpo region turned out to be a hidden treasure with a remote trekking destination leading to the Phoksundo Lake.
This exploration mission was to find an exploration route. While the exploration advanced, Mr. Sumba and his team faced near death situation due to hunger. Our team had to walk for two days without any food due to the remoteness of a region at that time. Barren land, low population, scarcity of food.
Today, this trail continues on three high passes, Kagmara La 5115m, Baga La 5090m and Numa La 5360m from Blue Lake deep the Phoksumdo and finally concludes in Juphal down the path of the throat with Tarap Khola.
The concept of High Country as a trekking and expedition company was developed during years of organizing and running expeditions all over Nepal. With all the experience of three decades, High Country Trekking Pvt. was finally established in 1999. This year marks our 18th anniversary in the making.
